Iowa City Area Out of the Darkness Walk is an annual 5K non-competitive walk to raise awareness about suicide and funds for prevention.
Walk to Honor a Loved One
Many people walk in memory of a loved one lost to suicide. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and The Crisis Center provide opportunities for survivors of suicide loss to connect with each other and get involved through a wide variety of educational, outreach, awareness, advocacy and fundraising programs.
Walk to Support the Cause
Participants also include those who have struggled personally with mental illness or suicide, those who come to support a friend or family member, and those who are passionate about mental health education and advocacy.
Walk to Raise Awareness
Up to 50% of the funds raised at the Out of Darkness Walk will be used locally to support survivors of suicide and awareness raising activities. AFSP uses the remaining dollars to fund research to prevent suicide and improve our understanding, to increase awareness about depression through educational activities, and identify warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses that can lead to suicide.
By deciding to walk you are taking a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority.
